Easy Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients

8 oz (225g) whole wheat spaghetti
1 pound lean ground beef or ground turkey
1 onion diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 carrot, peeled and grated
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
Olive oil for cooking
Grated Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the whole wheat spaghetti according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet or pan, heat a bit of olive oil over medium heat.
Add diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the lean ground beef or ground turkey to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it's browned and cooked through.
Add the grated carrot to the skillet and cook for a few minutes until it starts to soften.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Add dried oregano and dried basil. Mix well.
Let the Bolognese sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a splash of water or broth.
Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve the Bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves if desired.
